Trundle bed evokes images of pee-pots, snoring Lords, and unshaven servants sleeping in a bare stone-walled castle room. The first mention of a trundle bed is made in the sixteenth century. It was common then to have the servants sleep in the same room to protect the Lord of the castle at night and also to do his bidding. They slept on low beds with wooden wheels which could be pushed under the main bed in the daytime.
It is named the trundle bed because of the trundles, wheels or casters which were used to roll the bed under the main bed and out at night. These trundle beds or truckle beds migrated to the United States of America. They are also called hurly beds and trumple beds and are basically used to save space in a room. The lower bed can even be brought up to the same level as the upper bed. The upper and lower beds do not have box springs. The lower bed can also be used as storage space if the mattress is taken out.
The trundle bed became very popular during colonial times in America. Trundle beds were common for children. During the day they could be conveniently hidden under the main beds making space for children to play in during the winters. It was also common for a slave to sleep besides her mistress attending to all her needs during the night and even fanning her with a feather fan if necessary.
With time trundle beds have become great space savers in modern homes. They are not as common as bunk beds. Trundle beds come in very handy when teenage girls or even younger girls have their first sleepover friend for the night. It is a cozy way to chat and do all the esoteric things that young girls do. A great combination is a twin bed bunk bed with a trundle bed underneath thus effectively creating space for three children to sleep in a small room. The trundle bed can be placed either at the foot of the bigger bed or at the side of the upper bed. It is also ideal under a day bed or wide sofa.
There are standard mattress sizes for trundle beds depending upon the country you are in. In America the standard size of the mattress is 191 cm long and 99 cm wide. In the United Kingdom the standard size is 190 cm long and 90 cm wide. In Australia, or the USA, the size of the mattress will be 187 cm long and 92 cm wide. In Latin America and Europe the usual size is 200 cm long and 90 cm wide.
Trundle beds are the perfect solution to a shortage of space in small flats in metropolitan cities. During the day the trundle beds look like ordinary single beds or wide sofas and fit in snugly with the rest of the interior décor. The trundle bed is only taken out when an extra bed is required for visitors. So if you have a space shortage it would be wise to select one of the many trundle beds available in the market.
